Chelmsford Rambling Club

Coronavirus - Latest updates and news

Chelmsford Rambling Club's aims are to arrange a regular programme of walks and to encourage the enjoyment, appreciation and conservation of the countryside and its network of footpaths. The Club aims to organise social activities and to promote a spirit of fellowship.

Club History

Chelmsford Rambling Club was started on 4th February 1934 when Mr. W V Hegarty advertised that he intended to lead a walk from Chelmsford Railway Station to the Thatchers Arms (now the Cuckoo) at Radley Green. On the day he was joined by twelve others.

The Group decided to meet regularly calling themselves Chelmsford Pathfinders, later changing to the Chelmsford Rambling Club.

A log book was started to record details of each walk. The original log book together with subsequent records of all the walks are still held by the Club (more details can be found here)

Whilst the War curtailed activities, short walks still continued on a monthly basis around Chelmsford. Car ownership was not widespread until the 1960's and until then the Club used public transport to get to more distant start points. In the early years walks were sometimes all day affairs - with ramblers not returning until early evening, having stopped at village teashops and wayside cafes for refreshment.

Membership continued to grow and social events became a more regular feature of Club life.

Today there is a wide variety of walks on the Chelmsford Rambling Club programme, and visits to places of interest, coach outings, socials and other activities now form an integral part of Club life.

The Chelmsford Rambling Club offers a range of circular walks to suit most abilities. At the present time the programme includes -

Standard Pace

  • Wednesdays: starting at 10.30am, a full day walk of 8/10 miles.
  • Wednesdays: starting at 10.30am, a half day walk of 5/6 miles.
  • Saturdays: starting at 2pm, a half day walk of about 4/5 miles.
  • Sundays: starting at 10:30am a full day walk of about 10 miles.

Easy Pace

  • Wednesdays: starting at 10.30am, a half day walk of about 4 miles.

Standard / Easy Pace

  • Wednesday Evenings (summer only) starting at 7pm or 7.30pm 3/5 miles

  • Tuesday/monthly starting at 10.30am, a half day of about 3 miles

NB Standard Pace - about 2.5 miles average per hour, Easy Pace - about 2 miles average per hour. This includes stops for refreshments, so the walking pace is slightly higher.

Walks are led by Club members and additional walk leaders are always welcome.

Every half year the Club produces a programme of walks for the coming 6 months. The programme includes all necessary details for each walk. Most walks will start within a twenty mile radius of Chelmsford. Members are expected to make their own travel arrangements as the Club does not provide transport to the various start points.

On all walks, members should bring suitable refreshment for the half way point.

The walk leader on the All Day and Standard Pace walks will usually have arranged lunch in a pub. Where, on the All Day Walks a Pub Lunch has not been arranged, the Walks Programme will indicate "Own Food."

Walkers will be expected to buy food, or a drink and crisps, if they have availed themselves of the pub parking.

The Walks Programme can be viewed by clicking on the link at the top.

There will be a nominated back-marker for each walk and all walks will consist of a minimum of 4 walkers.
Walk leaders receive guidelines to ensure the enjoyment and safety of walkers.

All walks are at the individual's own risk. Neither the Club nor the leader can accept any responsibility for any accident or injury which may occur during any of the Club's walks or other activities.

  • Walking boots and suitable clothing are recommended
